While it downloads: how to open BuildGist for Mac, and what to do first.
1. Open the app
- Open the download. In your browser's list of downloads, or in your Downloads folder, open the file whose name starts with BuildGist and ends in .dmg. A window named BuildGist opens, with BuildGist in it.
- Double-click BuildGist in that window. It is the only thing there. You don't need to drag it anywhere: opened from this window, BuildGist copies itself to your Applications folder.
BuildGistDouble-clickA drawing of the window, not a screenshot: BuildGist is the only thing in it. - Choose Open when macOS asks. The first time, macOS asks:
“BuildGist” is an app downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it?
with a line saying which browser downloaded it and when. macOS asks this the first time you open any app downloaded from the internet; BuildGist is notarized by Apple. If it says BuildGist cannot be opened, go to System Settings, Privacy & Security, and choose Open Anyway.
Next time, open BuildGist from Applications: press Command-Space and type BuildGist. BuildGist for Mac needs a Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or later) and macOS 12 or later.
2. What to do first
- Sign in with GitHub. In BuildGist, choose Sign in to BuildGist; your browser opens, and you continue with GitHub. BuildGist does not access your GitHub repositories. Then choose Connect this Mac, and Open BuildGist when your browser asks (Safari says Allow).
- Let BuildGist get your agents ready. It sets up each supported coding agent it finds and says You're ready. Codex needs you to approve BuildGist once, in Codex; BuildGist shows the steps.
- Run one task in Claude Code, Cursor or Codex, in a Git project. Ask for something that changes code, like a small fix. Very small changes stay quiet.
- Open its first plain-English explanation. It appears in your Inbox after the run.
